BranchPattern has been a trusted partner of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) since 2014, serving as an independent, third-party commissioning authority for some of their most notable new construction projects. These projects have been critical to supporting CMU’s global leadership in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Advanced Manufacturing, Robotics, and Life Sciences.
“Pittsburgh's future — and the future of U.S. innovation and global competitiveness — are inextricably linked to scientific and technological advances, and how well organizations, communities, and industries can stay ahead of the rapid pace of change. Carnegie Mellon is positioned at the forefront of science and innovation's great promise, and this visionary grant will fuel the research and activities that will build this exciting future," said Farnam Jahanian, CMU president
In addition to large-scale projects, we understand the dynamic needs of a university and provide quick, as-needed support for smaller projects and renovations on critical timelines, such as summer and holiday breaks. Furthermore, BranchPattern has provided Green Building Certification support, helping several projects achieve the campus standard of LEED-Gold certification.
Our commissioning expertise has contributed to the success of key CMU projects, including:
Highmark Center for Health, Wellness & Athletics: Currently in progress, this project aims to achieve LEED Gold certification. BranchPattern’s Cx services and early sustainability workshops have helped lay the foundation for improved efficiency and occupant experience, directly addressing CMU's goals of sustainability and wellness.
Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Institute (Mill19): A transformative project that turned a sprawling, defunct steel mill into a cutting-edge robotics manufacturing hub, part of the "4th Industrial Revolution." To help CMU meet ambitious energy efficiency and sustainability targets, BranchPattern provided Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning services. Our focus on indoor environmental quality, including spatial daylight autonomy, helped ensure the facility combined functionality with modern design, supporting CMU's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
TCS North of Forbes: This collaboration between CMU and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) created a pioneering hub for robotics research. BranchPattern’s Cx expertise was vital in ensuring the performance of the building’s complex systems and its enclosure, including the verification of a significant curtain wall assembly. By supporting this project, we have furthered CMU's dedication to fostering STEM education and advancing technological boundaries.
Fifth & Clyde Residence Hall: Tasked with ensuring the residence hall enhanced student life on campus, BranchPattern delivered comprehensive commissioning services, including enclosure commissioning, to verify that all systems functioned as designed. Our adherence to strict testing schedules maintained construction timelines and contributed to CMU's goal of providing sustainable student living spaces.
The Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences: Made possible by a generous $75M donation from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, this innovative hub is where science, technology, art, and creativity will converge in exciting ways. As the sustainability consultant, BranchPattern is conducting sustainability workshops and managing the LEED certification process, showcasing our commitment to environmental stewardship. Additionally, our role as the Commissioning Authority (CxA) has allowed us to contribute to enhanced enclosure performance through design reviews, defining technical requirements, and overseeing functional performance testing. By maintaining regular on-site observations and promoting collaborative problem-solving, we help ensure the project adheres to the highest standards, fostering a successful and cohesive environment that aligns with Carnegie Mellon University's vision for excellence and sustainability.
Through each of these projects, BranchPattern has not only met but exceeded CMU's expectations, delivering sustainable, efficient, and innovative solutions that have made a lasting positive impact on both the university and its community. Our relationship with CMU showcases the power of collaboration in advancing technology, education, and environmental stewardship.
